Why We Have a No-Mascara Policy for Lash Clients

If you’ve ever had lash extensions (or you’re thinking about getting them), you may have heard your lash artist say something like: “Just a reminder, no mascara while wearing extensions!”

And while that might seem like a small ask, it’s actually a really important rule that helps protect your lashes, your eye health, and the quality of your lash set. Here's exactly why we have a no-mascara policy for all lash clients.

1. Mascara Weakens Lash Adhesive

Lash extensions are bonded to your natural lashes using a professional-grade adhesive. Mascara, especially waterproof or long-wear formulas, can break down that adhesive, causing extensions to fall off earlier than they should.

Even “lash extension safe” mascaras can affect retention and lead to poor results, especially if worn regularly.

2. It’s Almost Impossible to Remove Properly

Removing mascara from lash extensions is a nightmare. You’ll likely need oil-based or intense makeup removers to get rid of every trace, and those are the exact products we tell you to avoid, as they weaken glue bonds and can cause lashes to shed prematurely.

Even with proper cleaning, mascara residue often stays trapped at the base of the lashes, creating buildup over time.

3. Mascara Causes Clumping and Stickies

One of the golden rules of lashing is one extension per natural lash. When you apply mascara over your extensions, it sticks multiple lashes together, this leads to what lash artists call “stickies.”

Stickies can cause:

  • Discomfort or poking

  • Premature lash shedding

  • Tension on the natural lash, which can lead to breakage

It also makes your lashes look clumpy, messy and uneven, not the full, fluffy result you originally paid for.

4. Increased Risk of Eye Infections

Mascara that’s not properly removed can trap bacteria and oil around the lash line, increasing the risk of blepharitis, styes, or eye infections. This is especially risky with lash extensions, as the area is harder to clean thoroughly.

Healthy lashes = clean lashes. Skipping mascara altogether helps us keep your lash line fresh and hygienic.

What to Use Instead

Instead of mascara, here’s how you can enhance your lashes between appointments:

  • Use a clean lash wand daily to fluff and separate your extensions

  • Book your infills regularly to maintain fullness

  • Apply a lash-safe serum to support natural lash health underneath your set

We know it can be tempting to reach for your favourite mascara, especially as your lash set starts to grow out. But trust us, it’s not worth it.

Wearing mascara with lash extensions can cause damage, reduce retention, make cleaning harder, and lead to clumpy, uncomfortable lashes. Our no-mascara policy is here to protect your investment and your lash health, so you can get the most out of every set.
